Encouraging Replay from EU Commissioner Hahn on the Situation of the Judiciary in Turkey

News of the IAJ

The EAJ President and IAJ First Vice-President Christophe Régnard received a very encouraging replay from EU Commissioner Hahn on the situation of the judiciary in Turkey. In his letter, Mr Johannes Hahn, who is EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood, Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, took note of the information provided by Honorary President Reissner’s report on the criminal proceedings against Judges Baser and Ozçelik. He assured that the EU shares our worries about rule of law and judicial independence in Turkey; the EU Commission is following the situation very closely and sent an observer to the hearings concerning our colleagues. It will continue monitoring processes and initiatives against judges in Turkey, inviting EAJ to go on providing information on violations of the principle of judicial independence.
