EU Commission’s 2015 Report on Turkey

News of the IAJ

An important report of the EU Commission has been published on Turkey. The whole report is available at the following web site:
http://ec.europa.eu/enlargement/pdf/key_documents/2015/20151110_report_turkey.pdf
We excerpted here the part related to the judiciary, which raises the same worries that IAJ and EAJ had expressed to EU authorities in these last months.
Namely, you can read that

“there has been no progress since early 2014. The independence of the judiciary and respect of the principle of separation of powers have been undermined and judges and prosecutors have been under strong political pressure. In the coming year, Turkey should in particular:
– create a political and legal environment that allows the judiciary to perform its duties in an independent and impartial manner, with the executive and legislature fully respecting the separation of powers;
– limit the role and influence of executive power within the High Council of Judges and Prosecutors and provide sufficient guarantees against transfers of judges against their will;
– introduce further safeguards against any interference by the High Council of Judges and Prosecutors in judicial proceedings.”

Here you can read the part concerning the Turkish Judiciary:
