Resolution on the updating of the U.N. Basic Principles on the Independence of the Judiciary

The Ibero-American Group of the IAJ approved in Brasilia on 18th April, 2018, a resolution prompting the United Nations to start the procedure to update the Basic Principles on the Independence of the Judiciary, approved by the General Assembly of the U.N. in 1985. The resolution, which was inspired by the recent approval by the Central Council of the IAJ of the Universal Charter of the Judge, will be forwarded to the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers. All Regional Groups of the IAJ are called to adopt similar resolutions, which might be summarized in a final resolution to be adopted by the Central Council in Marrakech.
