International Conference “LAW & CLIMATE” in Baku
This year, Azerbaijan has been selected as the Presidency of the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29). On the eve of this event, the Union of Judges of Azerbaijan, member of the International Association of Judges (IAJ), will host an international conference on “Law and Climate” in Baku on 6 September 2024.
The conference aims to bring together leading academics, legal professionals, and environmental experts to discuss the intersection of law and climate change. The objective is to explore legal frameworks, policies, and strategies that can effectively address the challenges posed by climate change and to foster international cooperation in this critical field.
IAJ President Mr. Duro Sessa and IAJ Secretary General Mr. Giacomo Oberto will attend the event.
Ethical Code for Judges and Prosecutors Approved by the French High Council for the Judiciary
The French High Council for the Judiciary published yesterday a new code of ethics for juges and prosecutors.
At page 17 of the appendix, you will find a reference to our Universal Charter, approved by the IAJ Central Council in Santiago de Chile in November 2017.
Probably it s the first time in an official document.The text of the Code and of the Appendix is available (in French) here:

32nd National Congress of the the Italian Association of Judges and Prosecutors in Bari

In the framework of the Congress, IAJ’s First Vice President and EAJ President Christophe Régnard has submitted a presentation on the issue of “Self-Government of Justice, High Council for the Judiciary and Judicial Independence.”

The French Association celebrated its 40th Anniversary in Bordeaux. Ms. Virginie Duval elected new President
During its last congress in Bordeaux the Union Syndicale des Magistrats celebrated its 40thanniversary. Our colleague Ms. Virginie Duval was elected new President of the USM replacing IAJ Vice-President and EAJ President Mr. Christophe Régnard.

Association of Croatian Judges informs the IAJ on a Constitutional Motion concerning judicial salaries
The IAJ Secretariat-General receveid following information by the Croatian Association of Judges:
“Dear Colleagues,
I am glad to inform you that Constitutional Court of Republic of Croatia accepted as grounded a Motion submitted by Association of Croatian Judges and declared unconstitutional the provision in the Law on salaries of judges which established that Government has right, by its Regulation, to order what is the amount on which basis of salaries of judges is calculated. Constitutional court in reasoning for this decision is leaning on various international standards, among which CoE Recommendations, Opinion No. 1 of CCJE, and IAJ 1999. Taipei Declaration.
