News of the IAJ
On Tuesday, 17 May 2022, 1.10 pm – 2.00 pm (CEST) will be held the side-event to the 31st meeting of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice:
The Rule of Law and the Role of Judges
In many countries around the world the rule of law is in peril. “The Rule of Law in Retreat” is the title of a book, which reflects on the challenges to justice in the United Nations World. It was recently published and will be launched in another side event on the occasion of the 31st session of the CCPCJ.
The side-event intends to reflect on the role of judges. Judges are the central actors to guarantee the rule of law. They can be defenders of the rule of law, or they can be perpetrators or be misused as tools to sabotage it. The panelists will present examples of both based on their respective perspective and experiences and may together with the participants debate on strategies, how to avoid the latter and to foster the first.
